I believe that any student who is trying hard in my class should receive a grade of a C or better. Because of this, I have set up my grading so that anyone doing their homework and Accelerated Math will get a C or better, even if they aren't passing the tests. My basic grading is: 9 points per night for homework, 20 points per week for Accelerated Math(or IReady, if we choose that platform), and about 200 points per quarter for Quizzes and Tests. Homework grades are on effort and showing work. Properly formatted assignments with work shown receive full credit regardless if they get the answers wrong. The effort and following directions get rewarded. After some great discussions on grades with our principal, Brian Williams, I have decided that I will no longer be giving zeros on homework. 50% is an F and that is the lowest I will go. This allows a student to always be in a position to improve their grade with some extra effort. On tests, any score under 50% gets bumped up to a 50%. I also allow retake tests for anyone wanting to try it again. Regardless of where a student is when they begin my class, I want to see them improve over the year. I have found that rewarding the effort is the best way to ensure this happening.
